The Power of the Pomodoro Technique for Students
Staying focused as a student can be very difficult. With constant notifications, social media, reels, and distractions, it’s easy to lose track of time and realize that instead of studying you make little progress. I personally went through this a lot. I would tell myself I would study but end up scrolling on tiktoks for hours and before I knew it the day was finished and I would still be behind.
This all changed when I learned about the Pomodoro technique!
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The pomodoro technique is a time management method that breaks your studying session into focused work sessions followed by a short break. The structure I use is:
- 25 min of work
- 5 min break
The idea is simple work for full focus for a short time then rest before starting again.
Why it works
The biggest problem for me wasn’t that I couldn’t do the work. The problem was that I couldn’t stay focused long enough. Twenty five minutes feels short enough where the time doesn’t feel like ages. But it’s long enough to make real progress. And before you know it, what seems like a short 25 min work session will turn into a 3 hour work session of very good work and studying. Knowing I only have to focus for 25 minutes makes it easier for me to start. It’s like tricking your brain to not do any distractions. One key change I made was putting the timer on a separate device because being able to see how much time is left makes me more locked in and focused until the session ends.
What I do during the 5 minute breaks
The 5 minute breaks are important but how you use them is essential. I don’t go on my phone or scroll through social media because those distractions end up leading to longer breaks. Remember your study time is to learn and get better, not have any other distractions, you can do that after you finish your study session. Instead I
- Stretch
- Walk around
- Drink water
- Take deep breaths
These small things help me reset and when the timer goes off I’m ready to get back to work instead of feeling forced into working.
Since using the Pomodoro Technique I have noticed a big difference in my productivity. I get more work done in less time and 3 hours will pass by without me feeling burnt. I don’t feel overwhelmed because I’m breaking up my work into small sessions. Most importantly I no longer feed into my distractions! The pomodoro technique isn’t just helpful but it’s a powerful tool for those who struggle with focus, procrastination, or phone distractions. This can transform the way you go about studying!
