The Bare Minimum Has Become the Gold Standard

When did the bare minimum become something worth praising someone for? This generation has lowered the bar so much that basic human decency is no longer the standard. An individual doesn’t cheat on their partner and is showered with admiration; a celebrity speaks up against racism and a parade needs to be thrown in their honor. Is being a good person so rare now? Have we as a society become so attuned to callousness that the bare minimum is now the gold standard?

But, I don’t think that’s the case. I think society is too used to seeing the bad in others. We have lost faith in ourselves and are trying to gain it back by appreciating the little things. We are taking society back to kindergarten, giving out gold stars and cookies to students who chose to keep their hands to themselves and not to run with scissors. I hope this is the case, because we still have a lot to learn. I think it would be best for all of us to go back to those classrooms, sit on those itchy multicolor rugs, and learn how to be good human beings.
