Three Things I’ve Learned This Year
As I start my junior year of college, I’ve spent some time reflecting on the last few months. Looking back on all of my challenges, opportunities, and new experiences, I realized that I’ve learned lessons that I know will stay with me for years to come. Here are three things I’ve learned this year.
1. You Have to Pick Your Battles
Not every argument is worth fighting; sometimes, you have to pick your battles. This is one of the hardest things I’ve had to come to terms with as someone who loves to voice her opinion. Over the past few years, I’ve realized that not every disagreement needs a response. There will always be situations where people have different perspectives, whether they are right or wrong.
It’s normal to want to express your viewpoints, but I have learned that it’ is important to recognize when a conversation is productive and when it’ is simply draining your energy. However, this doesn’t mean staying silent—it means knowing when your voice can make the greatest impact.
2. It’s Okay Not to Have Everything Figured Out
I’ve always felt pressured to have everything figured out. People were always in my ear, telling me, “You have to do this,” or, “You can’t do that.” For a long time, I pushed myself to become the person they wanted me to be, but I eventually realized that this is my life, not theirs.
It’s okay not to have everything figured out, and it’s okay to make mistakes. I’ve slowly started to come to terms with this, and as a result, I’ve seen an improvement in my life.
3. The People Around You Matter
The people you surround yourself with not only affect the person you are now, but also the person you will become. I’ve learned how important it is to surround myself with people who make me feel supported and encouraged.
These people can make difficult moments easier, but they are also the ones who will tell you when you’re wrong. The right people challenge you, support you, and help you become the best version of yourself.
As I look ahead to the next year, I know there will be new challenges and lessons waiting for me. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m grateful for the lessons from the year before and excited to see what the future holds.
