The Importance of Diversity in Higher Education
College is often described as a place where anyone can work hard, get an education, and create opportunities for their future. However, students do not all begin with the same opportunities. Differences in school resources, family income, access to college preparation, and other factors can affect who has the opportunity to attend college and succeed once they get there. These inequalities are important to recognize when talking about racial equality and social justice.
For many students, college can be a completely different experience depending on their background. A student who attended a well-funded high school may have had access to advanced classes, college counselors, and extracurricular activities, while another student may have attended a school with fewer resources. These differences can affect college applications long before a student ever submits one. Racial and economic inequalities can overlap, making access to higher education an important part of conversations about systemic inequality.
At ARCC, discussing racial inequality in education is important because education can influence a person’s future opportunities. Creating more inclusive college communities means recognizing the different experiences students bring with them and making sure students have opportunities to succeed. Anti-racism is not just about addressing discrimination when it happens. It is also about understanding the larger inequalities that can affect people’s lives. By continuing conversations about education, opportunity, and racial equality, students can help create communities where everyone has a fair chance to succeed.
