How Pollution Disproportionately Affects Communities of Color

When people think about racism, they often think about discrimination in schools, workplaces, or the criminal justice system. However, racism can also affect the environment people live in. Environmental racism occurs when communities of color and low-income neighborhoods are disproportionately exposed to pollution, toxic waste, and other environmental hazards. These communities are often located near factories, landfills, and busy highways, which can negatively affect residents’ health and quality of life. This shows that racial inequality extends beyond individual interactions and can influence something as basic as access to clean air and safe drinking water.

One example of environmental racism is the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. In 2014, Flint changed its water source to the Flint River without properly treating the water to prevent lead contamination. The crisis disproportionately affected a predominantly Black community, exposing residents to serious health risks. The situation raised important questions about environmental justice, government accountability, and whether all communities receive the same level of protection. Flint demonstrates how decisions made by government officials can have lasting consequences for vulnerable populations.

The Anti-Racism Commitment Coalition can help bring attention to environmental racism by educating communities and encouraging people to advocate for environmental justice. Fighting racism means recognizing that inequality can appear in many different forms, including unequal access to clean water, healthy neighborhoods, and safe living conditions. People can help by supporting environmental justice organizations, learning about local environmental issues, and speaking up when communities are being overlooked. These actions can help ensure that every neighborhood receives the resources and protections it deserves. Environmental justice is racial justice, and everyone deserves the right to live in a healthy and safe environment, regardless of their race or income.
