DEI in the Workplace
Written by: Hayley Gallagher
Diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEl, is a workplace term that has grown in popularity over the past few years. It refers to policies and procedures that encourage the representation and participation of people of different genders, races, ethnicities, religions, and other defining features.
Along with diversifying the workforce, DEl initiatives are also designed to ensure that all employees have equal access to salary and benefits, resources, and advancement opportunities. Diverse and inclusive work environments are mutually beneficial to employees and employers, because the workplace becomes a much more creative and tolerant place, increasing overall satisfaction.
Before DEl plans became mainstream throughout corporate America, being a white, straight, man was an advantage in getting a job or a promotion. With DEl policies, the door opens for women and people from minority groups to have an equal chance at gaining the roles they were often overlooked for in the past. Fifty-six percent of employed adults in the U.S. agree that increasing DEl at work is a good thing, and 54 percent say their company pays the right amount of attention to increasing DEI.
The majority of the workforce supporting this cause, it proves that working with others from different cultures and backgrounds makes the work environment a better place. We must continue to support, create, and refine DEl programs to ensure a positive future for employees and employers alike.
