The Importance of Self-Care: Why Slowing Down Matters

When people hear the words “self-care,” they often think of face masks, vacations, or expensive spa days. While those things can absolutely be forms of self-care, I think we sometimes forget that the simplest kind of self-care is giving yourself permission to slow down.

We live in a world that constantly tells us to stay busy. There’s always another assignment to finish, another shift to pick up, another email to answer, or another goal to chase. After a while, it can feel like we’re doing something every second of the day. But the truth is, you don’t always have to be productive to be making progress.

One thing I’ve been learning is that time is something you’ll never get back. You can always redo an assignment if you need to. You can pick up another shift at work. There will always be another opportunity to work harder. But you can’t get back the time you never gave yourself to slow down, breathe, and simply exist. Those quiet moments where your mind gets to reset are just as valuable as the moments you’re checking things off your to-do list.

Sometimes self-care looks like sitting outside and enjoying the fresh air. Sometimes it’s putting your phone away, listening to your favorite music, taking a walk, reading a book, or even just sitting in silence. You don’t always have to be doing something. Giving yourself permission to do nothing for a little while isn’t being lazy, it’s allowing your mind and body to recharge.

I’ve realized that constantly feeling like I need to be busy isn’t healthy. We often wear being “booked and busy” like a badge of honor, but being exhausted all the time shouldn’t be the goal. Rest isn’t something you have to earn after you’ve burned yourself out. It’s something you deserve because you’re human.

At the end of the day, life isn’t only about how much you accomplish, it’s also about how you experience it. So don’t feel guilty for slowing down every once in a while. The assignments will get done, another shift will come along, and the work will still be there tomorrow. But the peace you give yourself today is time you’ll never regret taking.
