Learning Who You Are Outside of Other People’s Expectations
Your Life, Your Timeline
One of the biggest things college teaches you is that figuring out who you are is not always easy. Many students enter college already carrying expectations from family, friends, or society about what they should do with their lives. Some people are expected to choose a certain career, maintain perfect grades, or follow a very specific path. When you are constantly hearing what you should be doing, it can become difficult to figure out what you actually want for yourself.
For example, I have been told many times that I should become a lawyer. While that might sound like a compliment to some people, it can also create pressure, especially when the people suggesting it have not actually gone through the process themselves. They do not always see the stress that comes with thinking about law school, the workload, or the responsibility of deciding if that path is truly right for you. Advice like that often comes from a good place, but it can still add weight to decisions that are already difficult.
In college, it can sometimes feel like everyone around you already knows exactly who they are and where they are going. You see people confidently talking about their careers, internships, and long-term plans. But the truth is that many students are still figuring things out. College is one of the first times in life where you have the space to explore different interests, meet new people, and question the expectations that were placed on you before.
Part of that process is learning to focus in on what you want to do. Even then, there is no guarantee that you will have everything figured out right away. Some people spend years working in a field before realizing it is not what they want to do long-term. That does not mean you failed, it simply means you are learning more about yourself and what truly fits your life.
At the end of the day, your life should reflect your goals, your values, and your passions, not someone else’s expectations. While advice from others can be helpful, the decisions about your future ultimately belong to you. College is not just about preparing for a career; it is also about discovering the person you want to become. Allowing yourself the freedom to explore that journey can lead to a life that feels authentic and meaningful.
