Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson, "The P stands for Pay It No Mind" is how she would respond to questions about her gender. She was a leader in the LGBTQ community helping their youth that were struggling with homelessness and discrimination and hate. Her actions on June 28, 1969 sparked what became known as the Stonewall Uprising, an event that was the start of what is now considered the Pride movement. Police officers routinely physically assaulted and harassed LGBTQ patrons at the Stonewall Inn and rather then accept this abuse, she chose to defend herself and her community. As is all too common for the black trans community, her life was cut short due to likely violence which has never been solved. Her life was an inspiration to all who knew her and for the younger generation of LGBTQ youth who are continuing her legacy.
